We are looking for an experienced Rent Service Officer to work within a busy Rent Service Team in Camden. 

The aim of the Rent Service Officer is to maximise rent and arrears collection by effectively manging a designated ‘patch’ of residential and non-residential accounts, ensuring the strict adherence of the pre court action protocol at all times.

LOCAL AUTHORITY EXPERIENCE AND HOUSING MANAGER EXPERIENCE IS ESSENTIAL.

Rent Service Officer duties will include:

  • Maximising income and eradicating debt owed to the Council, while protecting vulnerable customers
  • Providing effective and efficient casework on tenancies within a designated patch or as directed
  • Meeting collection targets in a challenging economic, social and political environment, whilst responding to the needs of vulnerable residents by providing advice and making the appropriate referrals to support agencies
  • Dealing tactfully and sensitively with the public in person and by telephone, sometimes in difficult circumstances to discuss their rent issues
  • Seeking out and identify “good practice” for arrears recovery that can be implemented within the team
  • Liaising with housing officers, court team, legal services, solicitors, supporting agencies
  • Carrying out home visits and to record information gathered during the visit accurately in writing
  • Co-ordinating information and writing reports and statements in clear, concise English
  • Explaining statements of account in a clear and simple way, both orally and in writing
  • Being assertive and have the ability to argue points tactfully, on the spot when necessary 
  • Representing the Council in court and to dress appropriately on such occasions
  • Maintaining accurate and accessible records and present statistical information
  • Recording information and producing management information on spreadsheets
  • Undertaking regular thorough ongoing account monitoring, data analysis, inputting and updating    
  • Maintaining up to date knowledge of the law and legislation regarding tenancy issues and the collection of rent
  • Maintaining up to date knowledge of Council policy and procedures relating to arrears work
  • Implementing Council policies and procedures and identify any issues that hinder achievement of the rent service goal
  • Flexibility to work out of hours i.e. evenings and weekends

 The ideal Rent Service Officer will have:

  • Local Authority experience
  • Housing Manager Experience
  • Advanced knowledge of Northgate
  • Knowledge about how to approach customers tactfully but firmly and discuss their rent issues
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Good numeracy skills for financial/rent calculations
  • Ability to work as part of a team to meet deadlines
  • Ability to coordinate information and write reports and statements in clear and concise English
  • Good IT skills including Microsoft Word, Excel
